The subject line was "Re: Exciting Updates Regarding Our Team Structure." There was no prior email in the thread. The "Re:" had no antecedent — it was a stylistic choice, presumably intended to convey continuity, as though this were a follow-up to a conversation everyone had already been having. As though there were context.
The email went to All — Lumenwave. There are 214 people on that list. At 3:47 PM on a Thursday, 214 people saw it simultaneously and made the same calculation: too late in the day to act on, too recent to close the tab.

Team,
I wanted to take a moment to share some exciting updates regarding the evolution of our team structure here at Lumenwave.
As many of you know, we've been in a period of meaningful growth and learning as an organization. Heading into H2, we're continuing to make thoughtful investments in how we're organized to best serve our customers, our team, and the long-term vision of what Lumenwave is building.
Effective [date TBD], we will be making some adjustments to team structure across several functions. I'm genuinely excited about the opportunities this creates, and I believe these changes position us well for the road ahead.
Some things to expect:
- Certain functions will be consolidating to drive better alignment across the business.
- We'll be sharing more specific details in the coming days and weeks as they are finalized.
- For most of you, nothing about your day-to-day work will change.
- If your role is impacted, your manager will reach out individually.
I know change can feel uncertain, and I want you to know: our people are our most important asset here at Lumenwave. I'm available if anyone wants to connect — and my door, as always, is open.
I'm incredibly proud of what this team has accomplished. I'm even more excited about what we'll build together going forward.
Thank you,
Manager OTG

The effective date in the third paragraph still read "[date TBD]."
Nobody replied to point this out.
Kyle, from People Ops, sent a reply to the all-company thread at 3:52 PM: "So inspired by this team and this direction 🙏." He was the first to reply. He was five minutes faster than he needed to be.
Greg read the email, closed the tab, and went back to his PR review. He found out two days later — through a calendar invite with no description — that he now reported to Marcus. Marcus had been at Lumenwave for six weeks. He had said "how we did it at Structiq" in three separate syncs in that time. He said it again at the next one, about this.
Priya heard nothing directly. She opened the Lumenwave org chart on Monday morning. It had been updated over the weekend. She messaged Greg at 9:03 AM: "Did I miss something?"
Greg sent her the email.
She read it twice.
She still didn't know.
